Almighty Blues

In a casual chat with a friend today I pointed at a ring on his finger and asked him why he wears it. He professed it brings luck to him and has actually worked wonders for his academic record. When I laughed, he said that there needs to be something you can fall back on, something you can look upto and wish things were better because of it being there.
When I shook my head, he asked why one believes in God? Who has actually and factually seen him, but still we believe him. I told him my philosophy on God.
When we can believe in ourselves not knowing the limits of our existence, not knowing whether tomorrow this self will remain or not, why can't we believe in a power that has no proof of existence? I believe God is a part of our subconscious minds, and even if he were true, the only reason enough to believe his existence is your continuing belief in him. Why do we feel the compulsion to bind faith and existence together?
To that he raised his brows, looked at his watch and as the bell rang indicating the start of the next class, he silently picked up his register and went off. I don't know if what I said made any sense to him, but it has left me wondering if the ring really works...

Amulets and colored stones all serve the purpose that God does..Keeps our confidence going. The belif that something supernatural helps us may bring out the best in it.
Right now I am covered head to toe with lucky amulets and charms... As long as it keeps my Mom happy I truly don't mind

Linus: Believing in something for someone's happiness is just as good as believing in something for personal satisfaction - so I'll take it as you're a believer in itself :)

I beg to differ here.An amulet or a fancy stone on me ain't gonna change the person I am.It's just complying with the wishes of people who matter a lot to me..

Lime:

But how fair is accepting superstition (not offending your mom's beliefs of course) for someone's happiness. If you were truly wary of it, you wouldn't comply with it - instead you would ask your loved ones to see the logicalities behind it.. no?

Some food for thought I believe.. I admit I haven't thought of it from that point of view

Lime:

I am surprised, and glad my point of view actually makes sense to someone! ;)

er.. Lime can u also tell me wat to do if my family keeps insisting on wearing amulets though I've tried hard ???
